Five men held for firearms racket in Uttar Pradesh

Five men were arrested in Uttar Pradeshs Azamgarh district Thursday for their involvement in the manufacture and supply of illegal firearms, police said. Several pistols and live cartridges were seized from them.

The five men, in their mid-30s, worked for a Bihar-based racket of manufacturing firearms and supplying them in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and other states.

"Acting on a tip-off, we arrested the five men in Jahanganj area while they were on their way to sell the illegal consignment of firearms to their clients," police inspector S.K. Sharma told reporters in Azamgarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.

According to the police, five pistols and around 30 live cartridges were recovered from the five men.

"On the basis of inputs provided by the five men, we have contacted the police of adjoining states to unearth the illegal trade that is being controlled from Bihars Munger," Sharma said.

High court tells Madhya Pradesh to build night shelters

Taking a cue from the Supreme Court, the Madhya Pradesh High Court Thursday directed the state government to immediately take measures to construct night shelters for the homeless urban poor.

The bench of Chief Justice S.R. Alam and Justice Alok Aradhe directed that the state government must immediately take measures to construct night shelters and submit a report.

The apex court earlier in the day took a serious note of the demolition of night shelters in Delhi and directed the central government, all states and their instrumentalities not to demolish any night shelter without providing an alternative.

The apex court observed that it was the duty of both the central and state governments to ensure, at all costs, that no death took place because of lack of night shelters or basic facilities.

During the hearing before the principal bench of the high court in Jabalpur, a petitioner charged the state of inaction on the issue.

The court was hearing a case between social activist Medha Patkar and the state.

Counsel for petitioner Siddharth Seth highlighted the plight of the homeless and argued that the state was running away from the responsibility of providing night shelters.

Advocate General R.D. Jain argued that the issue could not be taken up by the high court as it was pending before the Supreme Court.

13 doctors dismissed in Madhya Pradesh

Thirteen doctors from four medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh were dismissed from service by the government as their educational certificates were not recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), an official said.

The doctors were working as lecturers in four medical colleges in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Rewa districts.

"As their certificates were not recognised by the MCI, we have terminated them from service," said V.K. Soni, director for health department.

Significantly, most of the dismissed doctors studied in medical colleges recognised by the state government and were working for over a decade in different medical colleges.

"If our certificates were not recognised, how we got jobs and how were we teaching in medical colleges? There is no option left for us to move court," said R.S. Dhakad, one of the dismissed doctors.
