A Congress leader from Chandigarh Thursday filed a criminal complaint against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari for his allegedly defamatory statements against the Congress while referring to Afzal Guru, sentenced to death in the 2001 parliament attack case.
Congress leader Chander Mukhi Sharma, a councillor in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, filed the complaint against Gadkari in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) here.
The court has listed the case for Jan 12.
In the complaint, the Congress leader said that Gadkari, while addressing a rally in Dehradun in Uttrakhand in September, criticized the UPA government for delaying the hanging of Guru.
"I want to ask the Congress leaders if Afzal Guru is their son-in-law? Have you given your daughter to him? Why is he being given special treatment," asked Gadkari during the rally.
Sharmas complaint said that Gadkari had made the statements to lower the reputation of the Congress and its leaders in the eyes of the public by linking them to an anti-national person.
Sharma said that he had sent a legal notice to Gadkari earlier to withdraw the statement and apologize for the remarks but did not get any response.
