Muharram festival

Muharram festival commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet.This festival starts at the 1st day of Muharram and lasts for 10 days until 10th of Muharram. Muharram is the first month of Islamic calendar.During this month, while on a journey, Hazrat Imam Hussain, his family members and a number of his followers were surrounded by the forces of Yazid, the Muslim ruler of the time.

During the siege, they were deprived of food and water and many of them were put to death. The incident happened at a place called Karbala in Iraq in 61st year after Hijra. This dispute was result of a disagreement among Muslims on the question of succession after the demise of Hazrat Ali, the fourth caliph.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar.It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting is prohibited.Since the Islamic calendar is lunar Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.Muharram is so called because it is unlawful to fight during this month the word is derived from the word haram meaning forbidden.

Muharram Festival Wishes : Day of Ashura 2010

Muhurram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar. The Mourning of Muharram is an important period of mourning in Islam. It is also called as the Remembrance of Muharram.


It is commemorated by Shia Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Islamic Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 AD).


In 2010,  Ashura (Moharram) falls on 17th December 2010.
